My LEED category is location & linkages. Location & linkages is designed to promote the placement of buildings in socially and environmentally responsible ways in relation to the larger community. So basically, we get points for building on already developed land.
The reason why location & linkages is an important part of LEED is due to the fact that it impacts our everyday lives. Think about it. It's much easier to live if your building or place of residence is put on land that was easily/already developed land that may already have pipes for sewage and water. Also, if there's public transportation near by, that's a big help as well. If we incorporate these factors into our building, i believe we will have an energy and environmentally responsible school.
I believe that we can improve on Location and linkages in many ways. For one, we should 'build out'. This meaning we should extend the building outwards, of course without interfering with the natural enviorment. The parking lot would be a good candidate for this. We would tear away the lot, build out into it, and recycle the bricks and other matter left behind that may be deemed useful. This would make the building constructioncheaper, easier, and of course more Eco-friendly.
There's not much we can do here, meaning not many other ways to get points in this category. Some important points to point out that help getting a building certified for LEED is how close you are to grocery stores, public busing, and otherpre-existing utility services. This is relevant because we cannot improve on those things, unless of course we ordered a Meijer to be built adjacent to our building complete with busing!
